45 Sampson St (Lewis-2)

The second working fire of the day was again a Lewis box. First-in Engine 12 had fire showing from four windows on the first floor. Seldom seen in the City of Frames, this two-family was type III construction. That feature and drywall-on-plaster interior walls kept the fire to the first floor unit with only smoke and fire department damage on the second floor.
One firefighter was briefly incapacitated after he got an eyelash in his eye, but AMR ambulance personnel treated the injury and he was able to return to work imediately. (Contributed Ambo-Cam photo.)

The whole "C" side was well alight upon arrival at this 1-1/2 story raised Cape. The fire appeared to have originated on the outside and spread up thru the soffit and into the second floor. A flaming propane tank added to the spectacle.

Iranistan Ave (Charlie-2)

Fire in a 2-1/2 story frame. Fire began in an exterior wall and quickly spread in the balloon framing. Once it was realized the fire was travelling, agressive truck work kept it from getting it out of hand.

181 Middle St (Adam-1)

The "Jayson Building" is one of numerous vacant downtown commercial structures. Light smoke showing revealed little about the large fire that was cooking on the third floor of this 4-story Type III building. Several interior (windowless) offices were involved. Renovations over the years left two, and sometimes three, ceilings throughout. With concealed fire rapidily spreading along floor joists, the possibility of extension to the fourth floor, and attached exposures on the "B" and the "D", Bat 1 wasted no time adding extra companies to the ticket (technically a second alarm). The fire was brought under control with interior handlines and lots of truck work.

Another month, another famous Boston Avenue landmark up in flames. The "Bishop's Corner" strip club was the scene of this early morning job.

Exotic dancer's death recalled as bar burned
By DANIEL TEPFER

BRIDGEPORT — On Friday, a fire closed Bishop's Corner. In its day, however, the notorious East Side strip bar was the focus of regular police interest, including the fateful October 1999 meeting between Mary Beth Coover and Lisa Rene Crabtree. At the time, Coover was tending bar at the Boston Avenue emporium while the skimpily attired Crabtree, the mother of three, was gliding around a pole at the center of the bar for the amusement of the clientele. The body of 28-year-old Crabtree, who grew up on an American Indian reservation in Oklahoma, was subsequently found Oct. 19, 1999 wrapped in a carpet on the floor of Coover's Main Street apartment. She was stabbed 28 times in what police described as a near-dissection. Blood was splattered throughout the apartment.

From the Connecticut Post:
BRIDGEPORT — A fire that severely damaged the South End home of about a dozen University of Bridgeport students was under investigation Wednesday by police. Fire Marshal Bruce Collins said he referred the case to the Police Department's arson investigators after determining the cause of the fire to be suspicious. The fire broke out shortly before midnight Tuesday in a three-story house on Park Avenue between Gregory Street and Park Terrace.
