Fire breaks out at nursing home laundry room
By DANIEL TEPFER dtepfer@ctpost.com
BRIDGEPORT - Seven workers at a local nursing home were sent to the hospital for observation after a laundry room fire Friday morning. The Bridgeport Health Care Center employees apparently did not require treatment since spokesmen at both local hospitals said they had no record of such an incident. No patients at the Bond Street nursing home were injured, and it was not evacuated. The fire broke out shortly before 9:30 a.m. in a first-floor laundry room at the nursing home. Assistant Chief Ted Derlega said a plumber was working on pipes with a torch when he accidentally ignited a paper filter. He said some lint caught on fire from the burning filter and the fire spread into the ceiling. Firefighters shut down the building's heating system to prevent smoke from spreading to other areas of the six story nursing home. Derega said the fire was confined to the laundry area and no patient rooms were affected. Nursing home workers attempted to put out the fire on their own before firefighters arrived. Chris Massaro, the center's administrator, said seven of the workers were taken to hospitals as a precaution. He said there were no injuries.

70 Garden Terr (King-1)
Numerous calls for this late afternoon fire prompted FCC to start out 4+2+1 from the get-go. When first companies Engine 7 and Ladder 11 arrived, they had heavy fire blowing out one window on the first floor and running up the side of an occupied two-family. Three 1-3/4 water lines extinguished the blaze, and the department did not burn another roof off an occupied residence. E-7,3,4,1 L-11,5 R-5, BC-1
