East Side fire leaves 2 people homeless

BRIDGEPORT
Two people were left homeless when a fire destroyed their East Side apartment building Sunday.
Nilsa Doran, a second-floor tenant, was taken to St. Vincent's Medical Center suffering from smoke inhalation and was treated and later released. A third-floor tenant, Mary Martin, made it out of the building safely.
The fire broke out shortly before noon in the three-story building on East Main Street, across from St. Charles School.
When firefighters arrived, there was heavy black smoke and flames shooting from the windows, said Assistant Fire Chief John Currivan.
He said firefighters managed to get the fire under control in about 25 minutes and kept it from spreading to adjoining buildings.
Currivan said an old-style gas heater in one of the rooms on the second floor ignited a pile of clothes placed too close to it. He said flames quickly spread up the walls to the third floor.
"The guys did a real good job knocking it down quickly," he said.
The second and third floors suffered heavy smoke and fire damage while water damaged a few stores on the first floor.

So how often do Communications send an engine AND a ladder on a commercial AFA? On this particular evening around six o'clock FCC did just that. And it paid off as Engine 10 was asking for the box several blocks out with fire in the sky. Four interconnected office trailers were in various states of combustion and collapse but presented no exposure problems. This property was formerly used as a munitions testing grounds under the ownership of the Remington Arms Corporation. Fortunately, no explosives were involved.

Fire wrecks engineering gear
BRIDGEPORT
A fire of undetermined origin heavily damaged trailers containing engineering equipment at the Remington Woods property on Asylum Street late Friday afternoon.
A security guard called 911 after seeing the flames, said Assistant Fire Chief Ted Derlega.
The trailers had been closed up for more than a month because of the cold weather.
The trailers are located in a fenced-off lot at the cul-de-sac of Asylum Street.
DuPont Corp. owns the property and is cleaning it up so it can be developed into office space.

Shortly after 2AM in the height of a blizzard, Engine 3 arrived on location at State and Arnistan to find heavy fire shooting out the rear of a large one story taxpayer. After a short time, the interior attack was abandoned in favour of heavy duty master streams. Two extra engines over the assignment were special called. Three out of four storefronts were occupied at the time of the fire and the building was a total loss.

Fire gutted a room in a vacant building in the East End Sunday afternoon. Police reported a fire in a first floor room at 371-377 East Main Street at 3:34 p.m., said Assistant Chief William Haug. The 14-by-16-foot room was engulfed when firefighters arrived, Haug said. They extinguished the flames 12 minutes later, he said. "There's evidence of squatters there," Haug added. The structure is the remaining portion of an apartment building partly demolished a year ago.
